Case Study

Intumescent Paint

An introduction

As part of the ongoing accessibility upgrades at Northolt Station in London, our team is proud to contribute specialist fire-protection expertise to support safer, more inclusive public transport infrastructure. Working in collaboration with Tema and Bourne Group Ltd, we are delivering a complete intumescent coating package for the station’s new walkway bridge.

The Challenge

The project involves the preparation and fire-protective coating of each individual bridge section prior to installation. To ensure long-term performance and compliance, every section undergoes a rigorous quality-assurance process, including:

  • Profile measurement
  • Soluble salt testing
  • Dust testing
  • Dry film-thickness verification

Once approved, the steel is primed and coated using Sherwin-Williams’ Platinum 120, a high-performance intumescent coating system that delivers 60 minutes of certified fire protection. This ensures the bridge structure meets stringent safety requirements while providing durable resistance in challenging environmental conditions.

Our Solution

We responded immediately, reviewing the survey findings and mobilising our operatives to site without delay. Our team worked efficiently and methodically, adapting to the building layout and completing the fire compartmentation works with care and precision. Throughout the project, we maintained open communication with the venue, ensuring our works aligned with their event preparations and keeping them updated at every stage. Despite the tight timeframe, we ensured all works fully complied with fire safety regulations, delivering a safe and fully compliant environment for the upcoming event.

Project Milestone

With all coating and inspection phases progressing on schedule, the completed bridge sections are set to be lifted into place in January. This installation will mark a major milestone in improving accessibility and safety for passengers using Northolt Station.

Outcome

By combining precise quality-control practices with industry-leading fire-protection technology, the project reinforces our commitment to delivering reliable, safety-focused solutions for essential public infrastructure.
