Project Overview
Hillmoore Fire Protection was appointed by BAM to deliver a complex passive fire protection solution at an ongoing refurbishment project at Broadgate, Liverpool Street, London. Working within a fully occupied commercial building, the team was tasked with delivering a bespoke solution to meet specific fire protection and compliance requirements.
The Challenge
During refurbishment works, it became apparent that sections of the building’s ventilation system were no longer in place. As a result, the existing ductwork required a bespoke extension to the existing ductwork system to meet the project’s fire protection requirements. With limited options available and the building remaining occupied throughout the project, a solution was needed that could be designed, manufactured and installed around a complex network of existing building services.
What initially appeared to be an almost impossible installation required extensive planning, multiple site surveys and close collaboration between the project team and the client to develop a practical solution.
The Solution
Hillmoore Fire Protection designed and manufactured a completely bespoke blast-proof enclosure system using Promat Durasteel boards and 3mm steel sheeting. Rather than relying on standard off-the-shelf blast-proof boards, every section was individually measured, hand-drawn and fabricated in-house at Hillmoore’s workshop before being transported to site for installation.
The made-to-measure system was carefully engineered to navigate around existing services while delivering the required fire performance and bringing the building back into compliance. Numerous planning meetings, site visits and design reviews ensured every detail was considered before installation began.
The accompanying images demonstrate the scale and complexity of the finished installation, highlighting the level of craftsmanship and engineering required to achieve a successful outcome.
The Result
Despite the significant design constraints, Hillmoore successfully delivered high-quality solution where few believed one was possible.
Through technical expertise, careful planning and skilled workmanship, the team installed the extended ventilation system without major disruption to the occupied building.
This project demonstrates Hillmoore Fire Protection’s ability to go beyond standard passive fire protection installations, providing innovative, bespoke solutions for even the most technically demanding projects.
